Abstract

This chapter is about the growing Muslim civil society and philanthropy in Germany. In order to understand its structure, it is important to consider the influence of the biggest, Turkish, migration group as well as to note the relationship between the state and religious groups, which is historically strongly linked to Christian churches. The first part will show the history of Muslim civil society in Germany, its structure, and how it got shaped by nonprofit law as well as the social circumstances of its communities. The second part discusses Muslim civil society in its current structure and the problems of financing and organizing that come with that. The last part gives an overview of the research landscape about Muslim philanthropy and civil society in Germany. As it shows, there are by far not enough data and studies about this topic.
