Does lean lead to resilient or fragile firms? An empirical investigation and a research agenda

Abstract

The author considers the relationship between lean and resilience. After reviewing the relevant literature on resiliency and the relationship between lean and resiliency, an empirical study on a sample of Italian manufacturing firms is presented. The study measures resiliency of the firms during 2020 (“the Covid year”) using two indicators based on financial and economic data. Results show a (weak) positive relationship between a firm’s (economic) resiliency and lean. The chapter urges scholars to do more quantitative research that uses financial data on how different configurations of lean bundles can help to weather different types of disruptions.
