Abstract

Today’s manufacturing companies operate in a highly competitive production environment caused by megatrends such as globalization, mass personalization, or global crises. At the same time, legal regulations are becoming increasingly strict, and consumer awareness is rapidly changing. Sustainability is becoming a crucial driver of the industry’s impending structural change, in addition to digitalization, which is already at an advanced stage. In the production environment, mutual tension is emerging between Lean Production, Industry 4.0, and sustainability. Integrating digital technologies into lean production systems offers considerable potential regarding sustainable value chains’ efficient and transparent design. This chapter analyzes the influence of Lean Production and Industry 4.0 on sustainability in production. Fifteen production experts assessed the effects of twenty lean methods and twenty-six Industry 4.0 technologies on eighteen sustainability dimensions as part of a Delphi study to provide transparency in the transformation processes of manufacturing companies.
