Conceptualizing the social determinants of health: the value of a global political economy of health perspective

Abstract

The idea that health is primarily determined by personal choices persists despite overwhelming evidence of broader societal and structural influences. This not only limits the effectiveness of public health interventions but also perpetuates blame and stigma on marginalized communities. Traditional conceptualizations of social determinants of health often fail to challenge these individualized narratives, prioritizing factors that can still be framed within the context of individual behaviours. To address this limitation, this chapter proposes embracing a global political economy approach to health. This perspective emphasizes the interconnectedness between global macroeconomic processes and health outcomes, effectively challenging the notion that health is solely a result of individual choices.
