The promise of left politics

Abstract

The promise of left politics today lies in the rediscovery and rearticulation of working-class identity. Decades of electoral left politics have focused on chasing the median voter and accepting that everyone identifies as middle class. But the facts say something different. Demographic, survey and economic data show that a working class remains, they are prepared to be identified as such, and they still need the classic welfare state policies of the traditional political left. Furthermore, research shows that centrist ‘third way’ strategies have not only failed to work but cannot work without significant political mobilization of a working class.
