Abstract

The Treaty on the European Union signed on 7 February 1992 in Maastricht established the European Central Bank (the ECB) and the European System of Central Banks (the ESCB). The ECB and the National Central Banks (the NCBs) of the Member States whose currency is the euro, constitute the Eurosystem, whose mission is to conduct the monetary policy of the EU. Since 4 November 2014, the ECB has been also responsible for the prudential supervision of credit institutions within the framework of the Single Supervisory Mechanism.
