Abstract

This chapter explores theories about the effectiveness of strikes. Starting from the functionalist assumption that strikes serve to adapt the expectations of workers to management´s space of maneouvre, it revises Perrone´s position that reserve power, i.e. the power to secure good wages and conditions of work without going on strike, would be supreme to achieving such results through strike action. Later research demonstrates that there is a solid statistical basis to assume a strike premium of 13% in higher wages due to strikes. These numbers also hold for countries in the Global South. Furthermore, approaches that analyse the political effectiveness of strikes, and forms of political exchange are also included as aspects of the effectiveness of strikes.
