Abstract

This chapter is based on survey data collected by the Crisis Response Studies project team in Japan in order to understand awareness of and preparation for natural disasters with a specific aim to understand the psychological factors behind attitudes toward the potential dangers of major earthquakes and the impact psychology has on disaster preparedness, including feeling of helplessness and depression. The concept of negative capability is adopted to consider how we ought to prepare to deal with major disasters by embracing an ability to endure in situations in which there is uncertainty or doubt.
