Abstract

Manuscript management systems can be indispensable throughout the journal-editing process, but they can also create extra work for editors and authors, especially when system presets clash with established editorial workflows. How can journal editors successfully use manuscript management systems while still honouring those workflows and the preferences of their authors and reviewers? This chapter considers the ways journal editors use manuscript management systems, first describing what these systems do and then proposing some modifications that editors can make to get the most out of them. It covers some of the main functions of manuscript managers - submission and resubmission, peer review, automatic communication, and data gathering - and then explores how each function can be approached and customised by journal editors.
