Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to distil the key skills, capacities and knowledges an aspiring Editor should endeavour to develop as part of an effective editorial management team. Using our experiences and insights, we also offer guidance on how to build - or rebuild - your journal’s editorial management team and introduce the critical support roles that underpin a journal’s success. Whilst no two journals are alike when it comes to editorial management structures, we nonetheless shed light on the ‘types’ of academics and industry professionals best suited to overseeing various components that fall under the responsibilities of an Editor-in-Chief. We conclude by underscoring the critical importance of developing diverse editorial management teams that are balanced in terms of gender and ethnic representation, geographical coverage, and theoretical viewpoints.
