Abstract

Selecting an appropriate publisher and software package for an academic journal are critical decisions for editors. While most journal editors inherit publishing and software arrangements, it is crucial to subject these to thorough reviews due to the evolving landscape of academic publishing, changing needs of the scholarly community, and the potential for enhancing accessibility and transparency in disseminating research. Evaluating and, if necessary, updating these arrangements can ensure that the journal continues to serve the best interests of both authors and readers. In this chapter, we discuss the essential considerations for editors when choosing and reviewing a publisher and software packages for their academic journal. Drawing on the experiences of a nascent journal editor and perspectives from a scholarly publishing team, we cover key aspects such as publisher reputation, publication model, and financial and workflow considerations.
