Abstract

This chapter focuses on uncovering and assessing relationships between two variables. It first distinguishes between the existence, direction, and strength of a relationship and stresses the importance of accompanying measures of association with a significance test. It then consideres several measures of association depending on the level of measurement involved. Next, it discusses key techniques for making specific predictions about a variable based on its association with another variable. Finally, it warns against interpreting correlation results in causal terms.
