Abstract

In this chapter, the importance of establishing valuable relationships and promoting your work in academia is emphasized. While the quality of your scholarly work is crucial, it is equally important to ensure that others have the opportunity to know about and benefit from it. The chapter explores strategies for gaining peer recognition, starting with connecting and forming personal bonds with scholars in your field. Building connections with influential figures and staying engaged with existing colleagues are highlighted. The chapter also discusses the significance of attending conferences and professional gatherings to meet and reintroduce yourself to senior scholars. Additionally, it emphasizes the value of establishing a strong online presence through platforms such as LinkedIn, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and Academia.edu. The chapter concludes with advice on presenting a concise professional self-description, known as an ‘elevator pitch’, and maintaining a web presence to enhance visibility and networking opportunities.
