Abstract

This chapter explores the significance of publishing a book in academia and its impact on one’s career. It emphasizes the lasting scholarly contributions and personal achievements that books offer, as opposed to the ephemeral nature of journal articles. Drawing inspiration from Paul Starr’s acclaimed book, The Social Transformation of American Medicine, the chapter highlights how books can establish one as a leader in one’s field. It provides insights on finding the right publisher and advises on developing a book proposal that justifies the work and appeals to potential publishers. It stresses the importance of being truthful and realistic about the book’s scope and target audience. Lastly, the chapter discusses contract negotiation and the limited flexibility in amending standard book contracts, while offering suggestions for areas where authors can enhance book accessibility and potential returns.
