Abstract

This chapter explains the Buddha’s enlightened wisdom concisely. It begins with a synopsis of the entire scope of the Buddhist teachings by reviewing the Pali canon and the Tibetan Kangyur and Tengyur canon. Buddha Shakyamuni taught three vehicles in order to get across to all beings of different capacities and tendencies: The Hinayana vehicle, the Mahayana vehicle, and the Vajrayana vehicle. The heart of the Buddha’s exalted wisdom is explained as compassion and emptiness. A bodhisattva’s way of life begins with bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment in order to save all mother sentient beings. Emptiness is the reality of no self or absence of intrinsic nature in all phenomena internal as well as external. In emptiness, things arise in dependence upon causes and conditions. Emptiness is taught to be the middle path, devoid of either eternalism or annihilationism.
