Politometrics: quantitative methods

Abstract

The scientific study of politics is two-fold: logical models and empirical tests with data. The construction of explanatory models with causal hypotheses should precede systematic data collection and analysis. Thinking should come before measuring. The requirements for an analytical model are to be simple, quantitatively measurable, involving either a specific linear or nonlinear relationship, directional and empirically tested. Several politometric models have produced cumulative and complementary findings. They have contributed to a better understanding of the choices and consequences of political institutions and the regularities that are observed and can be predicted at several successive stages of the political process, from the size of the polity to the policy outcomes.
