Abstract

This chapter reviews the state of research on the interrelationship between key political institutions (the regime type and different models of democracy) and various forms of political support (support for democracy, satisfaction with democracy, political trust, and incumbent support). We address the role of political institutions as the dependent variable, the independent variable, or as a moderator. First, we consider the importance of political support for the emergence and survival of democracies. Second, we evaluate whether levels of political support vary between different regime types and majoritarian or consensual models of democracy. Third, we draw on research on the winners-losers gap and economic voting to assess how political institutions moderate the impact of election outcomes and the state of the economy on political support.
