Abstract

China has the explicit objective of a world cup victory for its national team. Despite this clear vision, organizational initiatives at the national level have been hesitant as the strategic direction has been unclear. There are various reasons for this, ranging from unknown return on investments to fear of illegal activities. In the domain of commercial clubs, the government is intervening by means of regulation. This is impacting pricing of international players as well as their salaries. Despite this, corporate investments in football development have been encouraged by State organizations. Even though the number of international players in Chinese clubs has been relatively unchanged in recent years, there is anticipation of benefits in the areas of administration, management and other areas which would benefit China as a football nation.
