Chinese vs. Western strategic systems: theory and practice

Abstract

This chapter underscores the fundamental differences between Chinese and Western military classics, revealing how they are rooted in separate cognitive frameworks that have shaped unique strategic systems. Consequently, the motivations, strategic priorities, and strategic approaches of China and Western nations differ significantly, with the latter often lacking a comprehensive grasp of the former’s perspectives. The rise and fall of nations are primarily shaped by three key components: philosophical and political foundations, economic fundamentals, and strategic approaches, all of which are grounded in strategic cognition.
