The Chinese strategic mind at work: the case of Mao Zedong

Abstract

This chapter explores Mao Zedong’s strategic mindset as a prime example of the evolution and implementation of a distinctly Chinese strategic approach. Mao was an exceptional strategist and brilliant statesman and leader. His strategic acumen did not stem from conventional military literature or formal military training but rather from indigenous origins, reflecting unique Chinese characteristics. Even today, Mao’s strategic philosophy, principles, and techniques continue to exert influence across different domains in China. Mao’s accomplishments can be linked to a ‘triangle’ framework comprising his personal attributes and qualities, his knowledge and ideology, and the successful execution of his ideas.
