Abstract

This chapter traces a decade of union engagement in economic development within Western New York, highlighting a case that echoes John R. Commons's call for institutions that foster collaborative problem solving and community-wide consensus building. It also situates that case within trade union history and the labor studies literature, areas of scholarship in which Commons conducted pathbreaking work that was integral to his institutional economics.
