Abstract

This chapter outlines problem solving as the foundation of John R. Commons's institutional approach to economics, with special attention to workers' economic insecurity in the 1990s. Among the keys to that problem-solving approach are investigations by researchers answerable to a diverse group of stakeholder representatives (such as an "administrative commission"), a focus on remedies that reinforce the common ground shared by competing economic interests and that might prevent a particular type of problem from recurring, and an emphasis on identification and diffusion of best industrial practices.
