Ethical implications of AI use in practice for decision-making

Abstract

In this book chapter, we focus on the ethical implications of AI use in practice for decision-making. We focus on the AI lifecycle, here conceptualized as design, implementation and (long-term) use in practice. While we recognize the relevance of “good” design and implementation, we suggest that to fairly assess AI it is of paramount importance to focus on long-term use, where most ethical issues emerge. To support our claims, we elaborate on six key characteristics of AI and, with the support of illustrative vignettes, we showcase how AI issues often emerge only after these systems are implemented in organizations and society. We end the chapter with a discussion of the implications for organizing associated with opportunities and challenges of revising AI systems once shortcomings are spotted. The chapter contributes to the literature by highlighting the importance of acknowledging that AI-driven (or led) decision-making needs to be continuously supervised by humans, because of its potential to lead to ethical issues over time.
