Developing health system resilience for the climate crisis

Abstract

Climate change is increasing risks to health systems that individuals and communities rely on to promote health and stay safe in a warming climate. The impacts of a warming climate on individuals and health systems are unequal and are affecting some populations much more than others; health authorities are not prepared for future hazards. Health authorities can protect populations from climate change but must rapidly scale-up actions to prepare for impacts, including by collaborating with officials in other sectors. New decision making frameworks and tools are available to inform actions to develop climate-resilient health systems. Robust assessment of current and projected risks and vulnerabilities of health systems from climate change, regular monitoring and evaluation of progress towards resilience and broad and meaningful engagement with communities support a strong leadership role by the health sector in protecting the health and wellbeing of all individuals in society from future risks.
