Hate at school: how often it occurs and how to prevent it

Abstract

This chapter will discuss the patterns and trends of hate incidents reported in US schools, offer recommendations on strategies for preventing and reporting these incidents, and discuss resources to support victims of hate incidents. Due to the rise of hate in US schools, it is important develop a better understanding of the prevalence and consequences of hate incidents in schools. First, we begin by examining reports on school-based hate crimes and other hate incidents according to national data collections. Second, we discuss the limitations with these statistics and review studies on the effects that these incidents have on students in schools. Third, we offer recommendations for strategies on prevention and reporting to address some of the gaps in the data collection. Finally, we discuss available resources to support victims of hate incidents in US schools given the adverse effects on the well-being of students in schools.
