Abstract

This chapter focuses on the unique consequences of hate crime victimization in comparison to other types of non-bias victimization, including the distinct mental and physical health consequences of hate crimes. Specifically, we review the physical, emotional, psychological, and social effects of witnessing or being targeted by hate on individuals. We also present a model for understanding the unique and combined impact of these harms. This chapter also highlights the distinct challenges of victimization and vicarious victimization faced by specific populations which are more at-risk for hate crime, including racial/ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities, among others. Taken together, this work highlights and summarizes the unique consequences of hate crime victimization and challenges for victims in seeking assistance and responding to their victimization experience.
