Abstract

Hate-motivated behavior (HMB) remains a public health issue. To better understand HMB, researchers need accurate tools to assess the prevalence, severity, and the underlying antecedents of various types of HMB. In the current chapter, the authors will discuss the theoretical origins of hate from social-psychological lens, including stereotypes and prejudice. The authors will examine HMB from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint and discuss how HMB is currently assessed, the tools that have been developed to measure HMB, and the areas where current measurements are lacking. Further, they will discuss the impact HMB has on the intended targets. They conclude with a discussion of future directions for the studies and assessments of HMB.
