The born global phenomenon: a review of process research

Abstract

The present chapter argues that understanding how born globals evolve over time is crucial in order to understand the focal phenomenon and its proper anchoring in the process-oriented internationalization literature. The chapter includes an in-depth review of process research on born globals to take stock of what we know about how born globals evolve and change over time (review of literature), map how we know what we know (review of theories and methods), and outline what we still need to know (gaps for further research). The findings suggest that born global process research suffers from a conceptual path dependency following international business research, which prohibits the development of a “theory of born globals.” The chapter culminates in a series of potential research questions able to further the knowledge about the born global phenomenon.
