‘Smelly Velcro Cat’: a narrative of managing obsessive compulsive ‘disorder’, generalised anxiety ‘disorder’, depression and an academic career

Abstract

In this chapter, early career academic, Louise Oldridge uses an autoethnographic narrative to explore her lived experiences of navigating an academic career alongside Obsessive Compulsive ‘Disorder’, Generalized Anxiety ‘Disorder’ and Depression. Considering the pressures of the academic context, Louise discusses her diagnoses and treatment before examining the experiences of her ‘disorders’ between 2020 and 2022. In so doing, she studies achievement, imposter syndrome and identity tied up in perfectionism at work. In this way, the chapter seeks to offer comfort to others, advocate for, and raise awareness of, the social model of disability and those experiencing mental health concerns (in academia).
