Abstract

Early career scholars in universities today face a unique set of challenges that make them vulnerable to burnout and mental illness, and the highly competitive and aggressive culture in academia can further exacerbate such pressures. In this chapter, we share our experiences first as PhD students and then Early Career Academics in the United Kingdom and Australia, highlighting some of the major difficulties we faced, including social isolation, impostor syndrome, invisible disability, and mental illness. Following this, we discuss how we have become advocates for academic mental health, focusing on the development of our blog, Voices of Academia. We conclude with lessons learnt from our advocacy experiences.
