Abstract

The voice and experience of casual academics in Australia is not often heard. Our qualitative study utilized 25 semi-structured interviews to provide an opportunity to hear the voices of casual academics sharing their lived experiences. They talked about their sense of belonging, work conditions, and mental health. The study highlights (1) the need for casual academics to have their voices heard in decision-making and (2) an opportunity to create more materially and socially inclusive work environments. We argue that in the current disruption of the higher education sector, it is timely for institutions to acknowledge the unique skillset and experiences of their diverse workforce in more meaningful and relevant ways. This can be done by supporting all staff in creating a sustainable work environment and career and at the same time, enhancing teaching outcomes of their casual academics through a sense of acknowledgement and belonging.
