In search of success mechanisms: the entrepreneurial filter

Abstract

The success of spinout companies is linked to their university entrepreneurial ecosystems, as a result it requires a conceptual model that captures the ecosystem’s role. The chapter first examines the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship, leading towards the knowledge filter in order to highlight a gap in explaining the post-start-up success. Drawing on the university entrepreneurial ecosystems concept the chapter proposes an entrepreneurial filter theory. It explains how the theory captures the dynamics of the university entrepreneurial ecosystems and how the ecosystem actors perform a filtration role that determines spinout company’s success. Finally, the chapter applies the theory to the general ecosystems concept and the non-spinout firm to present its broader appeal.
