Abstract

Universities are often thought of as features of urban areas, yet some higher education institutions are also based in small towns, some of which are located in predominantly rural areas. As such, the chapter aims to explain how universities approach spinout company formation, what makes them decide which knowledge type has entrepreneurial potential, and where spinoff companies incubate once established. The chapter progresses to challenge the notion that universities, and subsequently their entrepreneurial ecosystems, are merely urban in character, by empirically examining them. Given that a considerable number of spinouts find themselves in such spatial contexts, the chapter explores the challenges faced by rural university entrepreneurial ecosystems.
