Rights and disasters

Abstract

In its original version this chapter was entitled ‘human rights and “natural” disasters’. The title played on the apparent contradiction between natural and human, suggesting that such divide no longer existed, since disasters were no longer ‘natural’. This has since become a well-established truth: Disasters are surely not natural. However, one might suggest that today rights are no longer human either. The updated chapter title is therefore reduced to Rights and Disasters. This reduction, however, does not make an investigation of rights and disasters less interesting, quite the contrary. This updated chapter accounts for the status on disasters and rights and discusses some of the future research central questions for (human) rights lawyers interested in disasters.
