Abstract

The future of the majority of humanity and of the planet is increasingly determined by the economic, social and environmental performance of cities and their inhabitants. This chapter summarises some of the main challenges confronting cities and emerging directions in strategic land use transport planning, the focus being on cities in the highly developed world. There is a particular focus on identifying gaps in scope and/or performance of strategic land use transport planning that seem likely to adversely impact desired societal outcomes, underlining the vital role for integrated approaches to land use transport planning. The increased priority accorded to equity and toa more urgent response to climate change are notable. The chapter then summarises the five main themes that explored in detail in the book, from working with structural economic change to equitably improve city economic performance to governance arrangements that support more integrated policy, planning and delivery.
