Digital transformation in the French construction sector: articulating technological transformation with a socio-economic transition

Abstract

The construction sector is a major one in economic and social terms in France. The sector is also key considering the green transition the country has to deal with. In this context, one has to consider with new eyes traditional issues in the sector, such as economic efficiency, quality and working conditions. In this respect, digital transformation seems to constitute a window of opportunity for the sector. The latter has thus engaged in a profound transformation for several years. This raises many issues in a complex and fragmented sector: diversity of technological innovations, work organisation in the sector with respect to disruptive technologies (BIM) and the development of off-site manufacturing, related evolution of employment and skills, etc. All of those topics underline the need for a stronger social dialogue at different levels to foster a fair socio-economic transition. This article provides a general approach of these issues.
