Abstract

This introductory chapter serves as a preliminary guide to understanding the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA Agreement) and what is at its heart: free movement and the internal market. It provides an overview of the EEA Agreement, elaborating on its purpose, the issues it addresses, and the objectives it aims to accomplish. With the EEA Agreement being a significant instrument that has shaped the economic landscape of Europe beyond the EU itself, this chapter aims to shed light on its various facets. It delves into the intricacies of the ‘two pillar’ system that governs the EEA. This system, comprising the EU pillar and the EFTA pillar, is a formal extension of free movement and the internal market, and fosters economic integration among a wider range of European states. The chapter also outlines the ambition of the book, and provides a roadmap of the book’s structure, detailing the content of each part and chapter. This sets the tone for the rest of the book, providing readers with the necessary background to fully appreciate the subsequent discussions.
