The politics of climate experimentalism in China

Abstract

Climate experimentalism is a global phenomenon that contributes to the development of novel socio-technical solutions to address climate challenges. Climate experimentation plays an important but relatively underappreciated role in China. This chapter explains the characteristics of Chinese climate experimentation in terms of five dimensions: uncertainty, hierarchical governance, international and local collaboration, urban governance and politics, and incrementalism and policymaking through implementation. In doing so, this chapter helps readers understand the nature of Chinese climate experimentalism. However, more studies are needed to better conceptualize the different models of climate experimentation and to identify the differences and similarities between Chinese and Western approaches to climate experimentation.
