Abstract

Keynes and Keynesian economics fit in well with the rise of the new system of reformed capitalism, which spread in various parts of the world from the mid and late 19th century to mid and just after mid-20th century. The chapter then details the political and theoretical reasons for Keynesian economics subsequent fall after about 1973, focusing on the changing attitudes towards the importance of money; and then the attacks on unions and the liberal welfare state ‚Ä" Galbraith's two countervailing powers to big business. It then details some of the reasons for the surprising rise of libertarianism in the U.S. in the latter part of the 20th century and early 21st century; focuses on Ron Paul's 2008 campaign book; and the anarcho-capitalist Murray Rothbard's writings, particularly his "What Has Government Done to Our Money" and its similarities to Rousseau's "Discourse on the Origins of Inequality".
