The megaproject challenge

Abstract

This introductory chapter identifies the global scale of recent megaproject construction activity; identifies the theoretical and practical advantages of building infrastructure megaprojects as well as the reasons why megaprojects too often run over-budget and over-schedule; looks at the connections between infrastructure megaprojects and the growth of very large urban regions; reviews recent empirical research into successful megaproject practice; identifies a megaproject research agenda, and lays out the main arguments and organization of this book.
