Gendering populism: the rise of right-wing populism and anti-gender politics in Brazil

Abstract

This chapter investigates the role of gender in Brazil’s populist moment, and how the rise of reactionary politics leads to backlash against and opposition to gender-related human rights. I start by considering the global factors that led to contemporary populism and how globalization has facilitated the emergence of populism in Brazil. I then examine the gendered elements embedded in populist ideas, performances, and strategies to argue that populism connects to hegemonic notions of gender. Focusing on the Brazilian context, I show that the reactionary politics of gender and sexuality are part of a broader counter-revolution against challenges in social hierarchies and rights expansion from the 1990s to the 2000s.
