Abstract

This chapter provides a review of the strategic leadership literature. The authors begin by discussing the definition, origins, and scope of the field, and then differentiating strategic leadership from related terms and domains, such as upper echelons, corporate governance, behavioral strategy, and the microfoundations of strategy. They provide a short summary of three representative areas within strategic leadership (managerial discretion, executive dispositions and values, and executive experiences), followed by a section addressing current critiques and challenges of this research stream. They end with a discussion of how strategic leadership research relates to some of the fundamental changes we see and anticipate as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
