Abstract

Given the importance of vaccines in recovery from a pandemic, such as COVID-19, this chapter examines access to vaccines and how it varies by gender and migration status, and at the intersection of gender and migration. We map gender differences in country responses to the pandemic for refugees, migrants (documented and undocumented), and internally displaced persons (IDPs including those displaced by environmental factors). Although most countries did not include a gender focus in their COVID-19 vaccination plans, they contained specific considerations for refugee or migrant groups. However, of the COVID-19 national vaccination plans we examined, not one prioritized the protection of intersectional statuses and identities of migrant/refugee and gender, such as migrant women, refugee women, or migrants and refugees with LGBTQIA+ identities.
