Artistic strategies by and about the International Criminal Court

Abstract

This chapter explores a selection of artistic and cultural engagements of and about the International Criminal Court. Reaching the wider public is a key concern for international courts and tribunals. Their means of communication are not limited to traditional efforts such as public trials, open-access transcripts and websites, but increasingly take ‘creative’ forms, such as the participation in documentary films and the contribution to and curation of art exhibitions. This chapter highlights encounters between the ICC and its different audiences through art and culture as well as an example of art as counternarrative. Evaluating the motivation behind such forms of outreach as well as the execution and perception of such encounters becomes particularly relevant in light of increasing demands of legitimacy, transparency, and accessibility.
