Abstract

In this concluding chapter the authors discuss the double-faceted nature of social policy as a driving and regulating factor in demographic and individual ageing. The entrenched directive function of social policy enables it to determine the life trajectories of individuals. These trajectories need to adjust to the rapidly changing demographic, economic and social context of the family, community and society as a whole. Social policy should provide the tools to further adapt existing mechanisms to support the life-long individual development. To inform the development of appropriate social policy support mechanisms, an agenda for policy-related research on ageing is proposed on the basis of elaborations and discussions in the individual chapters of this book.
