Abstract

This chapter will discuss systems theories and methodologies and their role in projects and project governance. It will first introduce three major systems theories – general systems theory, cybernetics, and social systems theories – that are useful in projects, the key scholars who developed them, and what each theory added to the broad space of systems concepts. It will then present some systems methodologies under hard systems thinking, soft systems thinking, and emancipatory systems and show how systems theories are enacted in practice. The methodologies will be described briefly, and their use illustrated with examples.
