Abstract

To truly understand the relationship between religion and health in the context of what we now know—that health is created from socio-ecologic and structural factors—one must apply a historic lens to this relationship. In this chapter, we review key frameworks about how health and well-being are created and the influence of religion within that. Using a case study of the role of religion in colonization and forced conversion of indigenous communities in the US—and the long-term adverse impact on health and life—and another on the reclamation of indigenous spiritual beliefs on building a more holistic health and well-being system in New Zealand, this chapter explores how religion operates in historic and geopolitical context as a cultural and structural driver of health, well-being, and equity.
