Abstract

Faith actors have long been recognized as central to fostering social capital and in a highly unequal South African context where many households remain food insecure, they are widely recognized for their role in food relief. Little has been written, however, from the perspective of the role of faith communities with regards to food security and wellbeing from a food systems and wellbeing approach and there are not many case studies within this context that explores this intersection. In this chapter we, therefore, want to highlight some often-overlooked perspectives emerging from case studies at grassroots which appear to indicate that faith actors are engaging in innovative and holistic ways with the challenge of food insecurity and hunger.
