Life and health of the public: a field in motion

Abstract

This entire Handbook has approached health with a perspective many would consider public health. This chapter provides critical tension by examining the short history of the field and its multiple identities, some positive, and others not so much. By coming to terms with our history, and leveraging new wisdom, there is immense potential for a new integration of the causes of death and those of life. We give particular attention to the intricate historical relationship between public health and healthcare, and discontinuities that emerge between the advancement of scientific and economic interests and pursuit of the common good. There is a need to see ourselves as a dynamic and complex whole, capable of remarkable possibilities if approached with new eyes and seasoned hope. This hopeful turn is not easy, given the tangled and often venal process of public policy, but a new awareness is itself a sign of life.
