Point of inflection: epidemic of health

In: Handbook on Religion and Health

Abstract

As an alternative to the current corporate and transactional views of health and care, this paper expands and explores Jonas Salk’s proposal that it is possible to create an epidemic of health. Salk viewed the keys to this change in perspective to be confidence in evolution, valuing of mutuality, and profound acceptance of the error-correcting potentials in our lives. The author outlines the challenges to faith in health and care resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and shows that Salk’s philosophy leads to optimism and to shared responsibility.
